RSS?

What is RSS?

RSS enables you to get the latest news and features delivered directly to you, rather than clicking from site to site.

By using RSS you can see when your chosen sites from anywhere on the internet have added new content. You can get the latest news including audio files, photographs and video delivered to you in one place, as soon as the information is published, without the hassle of having to visit each site regularly.

RSS feeds are, in effect, a different type of web page, designed to be read primarily by computers rather than people. Delivering information to computers free of charge.

RSS is not provided by all web sites, but its popularity is growing quickly, and you'll see the 'famous' image around the web.

How do I use it?

Initially you need to set yourself up with a 'news reader'. This is a piece of software that checks RSS feeds and lets you read any new articles or items that have been added to them.

There are a whole host of 'news readers' available. Some are accessed via a browser and some are independent applications that can be downloaded over the internet.

Once you have chosen a news reader, the next step is to decide what content you want to receive. To do this you need to find the feeds your interested in and then subscribe to them.

Remember to look for the image (or similar image or possibly a standard web link); this indicates that a feed is available on that site.

If you click on the button you can subscribe to the feed in a number of ways. For example, simply copy the URL of the feed (displayed in the location bar of your browser) and paste it into the section within your news reader for subscribing to new feeds. It can be as simple as that!
