Shielding Lotions

Gloves in a Bottle: the way forward for dry skin problems

Dr Helton talks about Gloves in a Bottle and it's impact as a shielding lotion Skin irritants and a huge number of other skin-damaging chemicals are added to the environment on an annual basis. These chemicals and irritants, in manu cases, strip the natural protection from the skin causing dry skin, eczema dermatitis and other skin problems. These environmental changes have neccisitated the need for a different type of skin care – the shielding lotion.
Conventional lotions basically perform one function – the replace natural moisture with artificial moisture. A high percentage of normal common household products, including even soaps, are absorbed directly into your skin, causing skin disorders or worse.

A shielding lotion treats dry, itchy skin more successfully because it bonds with the outer layer of the skin and replaces the protective barrier. This keeps the irritants out and allows your own natural oils and moisture in, argues Dr. Peter Helton, dermatologist.

"Shielding lotions don't wash or rub off," agrees Dr. Brian Zogg, another dermatologist. "Because a shielding lotion stays on and protects the skin it's a very effective treatment for the dry skin conditions we see here in the winter months."

"Your skin wasn't designed to deal with soap and the thousands of other everyday chemicals you come into contact with each day. Nearly everyone's skin is exposed to harmful chemicals on and off the job. That is why Shielding Lotions are so important. They help prevent exposure by bonding with and protecting the skin. A shielding lotion will not only add moisture to your skin, but also help stop the loss of your natural moisture", Dr. Helton.

Dr Benest talks about Gloves in a Bottle as a shielding lotion "When your skin gets dry and itchy you know that the protective outer layer of skin has been stripped away. Most people need to use a shielding lotion like Gloves In A Bottle. In the winter they all get very dry skin. We recommend shielding lotion as a dry skin care treatment. We also recommend shielding lotions for anyone who is exposed to chemicals in their work environment. Your skin is exposed to irritants and chemicals almost every day, even in a normal household environment, so a shielding lotion can be useful to most people. And it won't create the negative moisture message skin can get from conventional lotions. The artificial moisturizers in conventional creams and lotions can send a signal to the moisture producing parts of your skin that enough moisture is present. Your skin then makes less of the natural moisture needed to resolve a dry skin problem. With a shielding lotion you protect your own natural oils and moisture in the skin, so it heals faster", Dr. Zogg.
"A conventional lotion is not formulated to protect dry skin like a shielding lotion does. Conventional lotions only add surface moisture to temporarily alleviate the dryness or itching. Shielding lotions stay on because they bond with the skin and protect it for long periods of time. With this protection in place your skin keeps its own moisture in and has a chance to use this natural moisture in the deep layers of the skin to heal itself", Dr. Lisa Benest, dermatologist.

One of the functions of the outer layer of skin is to act as a one way barrier, preventing irritants from coming in but still allowing it to breathe. Shielding lotions are an excellent dry skin care product because they restore the natural balance of the skin by helping prevent moisture robbing irritants from entering the skin while also reducing moisture loss but they do not prevent the skin from breathing. They often improve breathing because they help keep the skin pores free of outside irritants that are often too complex to be eliminated naturally.
